brain as a maze puzzle black and white

By Rachel D. Egan, PMHNP-BC

In August 2025, multiple news sources started publishing articles on the potential benefits of lithium for Alzheimer’s disease. A nearly-decade long study led by Dr. Bruce Yankner of Harvard Medical School showed a correlation between low levels of lithium in the brain and amyloid plaques and tau tangles that we know are associated with development of Alzheimer’s (Santhanam, 2025).

The implications of this study are enormous. At Harborside, we have long incorporated the use of low dose lithium (in over the counter doses) for overall brain health and prevention of Alzheimer’s in those with family history, as well as for reduction of suicidality and self-harm. I was fortunate to learn about the benefits of low-dose lithium from renowned psychiatrist Dr. James Greenblatt, who has extolled it’s value for years. We highly recommend his book, Integrative Medicine for Alzheimer’s, for a deeper dive into this subject.
