Many people are familiar with the importance of iron for maintaining good energy levels. Some may also be familiar with the concept that when our iron levels dip low, folks can experience low mood and low motivation in a way that mimics depression.
I’ve found that fewer people are aware of the impact that low iron levels can have on attention and focus. Certainly for our adolescents with ADHD, it is critical to monitor iron levels, particularly levels of stored iron (called ferritin). Those levels need to be in a good place to support sustained attention and focus. At Harborside, we also test iron panels in younger kids who present for consultation for concerns about ADHD. In many cases, treating low iron levels along with any other concerns can improve attention and focus dramatically. It’s critical to be working with a trusted provider when you introduce an iron supplement. Too much iron also has ill effects, and you should never supplement iron based on symptoms alone (i.e., a diagnosis of ADHD does not necessarily mean an iron supplement is warranted).
